Continue on with the other two paragraphs from Section 3 on Art as Protest website. These should be on slides after your original Art / Not Art slides from Monday.
Move onto Section 4 and Section 5.

*****  Remember that Section 6 is your assessment task.  *****

Next term: Time in class for first two lessons, due on 3rd lesson back (ie L1/L2 on Thursday 14 October)

Art as Protest

(Dewhirst Mon 21/9; Pope Tues/Wed 22-23/9)

Only one thing to do at the end of our citizenship unit: how much did you improve on the Australian Citizenship Test? Re-take it and compare with your initial score.
NOTE: 9DEWHIRST class averaged about 90%, so pressure is on, 9POPE!

We are going to do a short unit on ‘Art as Protest’ following on from the citizenship unit.

Start a new powerpoint document, with a Title Page ‘Art as Protest‘.

  1. Paste and name 2 examples of what you consider to be ‘Art’
  2. Paste and name 2 examples of what others consider to be ‘Art’ but you don’t think it is. For example:Jackson Pollock, 'Blue Poles', Jackson Pollock, ‘Blue Poles’, National Gallery of Australia. Not what I would call ‘art’ but I didn’t spend $1.3 million on it in 1973, nor would I spend $20 million to $100 million on it now!
  3. Paste and name 2 examples of what is not ‘Art’.

Share….

The next few lessons will be on a specific website for this unit:

http://artasprotest.weebly.com/

We will work through each section (1-5) and then 6 is the assessment task:

*** Due Friday, Week 1, Term IV ***

9Dewhirst Homework from Mon 21/9 … Finish 1, 2 & one of 3

MP for a week

9 Dewhirst – Monday 14 Sept L4&5
9 Pope – Tues 15 Sept / Wed 16 Sept

As we look at the role of the local Members of Parliament, here is a pretty good simulation from the UK Parliament.

As you play the simulation, please keep a diary of the day/time, what actions you took, why you acted this way, and the reaction your actions had for your ‘Party Reputation’, ‘Voter Support’ and ‘Media Profile’.

MP for a week

At the end:
– what did you learn about being a Member of Parliament?
– what did it confirm about what you already knew about being an MP?
– did you spot any differences that you think might be between Australia and UK?

If you finish – please look at the different options under ‘Political Activism’ from the post for 7 September ‘Participatory Democracy’ … especially Free Rice!
– Why were each established?
– What do they hope to achieve?

Finish the lesson on the Free Rice website, contributing food to the World Food Program. Attempt a few different subject areas.

We will look at letters to your local Member of Parliament (MP) on Thursday. Please make sure they are done.
Cheers
Mr Toohey

  • Where do you live?
  • What electorate are you in?
  • Who is your local member?
  • When can you vote?
  • How do you do it?
  • How else can my opinions be heard?

The Australian Electoral Commission runs everything to do with voting at Federal Elections.

Mapping Exercise

(9Dewhirst Mon 7/9; 9Pope Tues 8/9)

  1. Sign into your Google account (… you do have a Google account?)
  2. Go to http://www.maps.google.com.au
  3. Click on the three lines at the left of the search bar My Maps on Google Maps
  4. Click on ‘My Maps’, then ‘Create’
  5. Using information from the AEC website on Electoral Boundaries, draw the electoral boundaries for metropolitan Adelaide (roughly Elizabeth to McLaren Vale, coast to Mount Barker)
  6. Identify which electorate you live in, then using the AEC, find your local member.

When can I vote?

(9Dewhirst Mon 8/9 & Homework)
(9Pope 9/9/15)

Using the AEC website, answer the following:

  1. At what age can you vote?
  2. At what age can you enrol to vote?
  3. Why might there be this difference?
  4. What sorts of special categories of enrolling are there? Read two. Why do people in these categories have special conditions?

Local Members of Parliament

(9Pope 10/9/15 + 11/9/15)

(9 Dewhirst 10/9/15 – both lessons.
Please have Q1-4 done by Monday, plus your issue ready to write your draft)

Use this infosheet to learn about the role of a local member of Parliament

  1. What are the three roles of a local MP?
  2. Why is there so much reading involved for an MP? What sorts of things?
  3. Why are communication skills necessary for an MP?
  4. How do MPs interact and serve their constituents?
  5. Using an Australian political issue that you have identified during this unit, or a more recent one (e.g. Syrian asylum seekers), draft an email to your local member of parliament (yes, you may need to look this up) about what you think and what should be done. (NOTE: Is it a Federal or a State issue?)
After I have read it, you may choose whether to send it or not. You can send it from your Immanuel or a personal email account (from a personal account is less obvious sending letters was an Immanuel class task!!)

Political Activism

There are a number of ways that you can be active in your community and have your voice heard more frequently than every three years when you vote. Indeed, you can have your voice heard even before you are eligible to vote!

Amnesty International
Amnesty has been a leading voice for change for over fifty years. It started as a letter writing movement, but now encourages email or online petitions.

GetUp!
GetUp! is an interesting one. Developed as an activism group during Howard government, it’s mission is to hold Australian governments to account through people pressure. It has a number of campaigns across a range of fields at any one time.

change.org
Change.org is a US-based internet petition site. Anyone can list a petition and others can sign to support. I wasn’t sure how it worked; wikipedia has some interesting criticisms, so tread knowingly

FreeRice
A GAME I encourage you to play! (My English guys, remind me about this!!)
For every correct answer, it donates 10 grains of rice to the UN World Food Programme. If you sign up and login, it will track your progress, but you can also play without signing up.

People Power > Government

Did you see anything in the news about ‘Border Force’ over the weekend?

The Australian Border Force put out a media release on Friday which was “clumsily worded” according to Mr Abbott but which stirred up many with these lines:

“ABF officers will be positioned at various locations around the CBD speaking with any individual we cross paths with,” Mr Smith said.

“You need to be aware of the conditions of your visa; if you commit visa fraud you should know it’s only a matter of time before you’re caught out.”

It might be too late to include in your task, but it’s pretty interesting. And it couldn’t happen in a whole lot of countries, even some of those who claim to be democratic (no names, but cough, where I lived last year, cough!)

And if you thought Mr Abbott was unhappy, you should have seen the Fuhrer…

Choose one issue that has appeared in a number of your articles and cartoons.
In an infogram style (can be done in Word, you don’t need to sign up to infogram):

  • explain the issue.
  • why is it of national or state importance?
  • what are some different opinions about it?
  • what do you think?

Proposed bill

Name:

A Bill to legalise same-sex marriage in Australia

Purpose:

Broaden the definition of marriage to include same-sex partnerships.

Proposed Enactment:

Beginning of 2016.

Applicable to:

Every citizen of Australia for whom the current Marriage Act applies.

media release (government)

The Government believes that Australia should join other countries such as New Zealand, Canada, the UK and USA in the will of freedom to legalize same-sex marriage. Why ignore something that is already a reality? Even the Oxford Dictionary has accepted same-sex marriage into its definition of ‘marriage’ since 2000.

Why has it taken this long for Australia to follow?

It is important to love yourself for who you are, not what the law says you are. Australia prides itself for being a ‘free country’, but is it really, when we are preventing happiness in individuals and communities?

Even if you want to stop homosexuality, making ‘straight’ people marry only won’t stop it. It has been scientifically proven that it isn’t the case that ‘straight’ people make more straight people, and gay people make gay people.

In conclusion, the government believes the bill should be introduced at the start of 2016.

For inquiries, please contact James Gregory
