The blog of a refugee

I came across this a little while ago, long after it was written. After looking at social justice issues, today I’d like you to spend much of the lesson reading the blog of a young woman from Baghdad.

In the last 15 min or so, write me an email with your thoughts – so you might like to take a couple of notes, or copy/paste any quotes etc (and date of post) that you find interesting, perhaps different to your perception of living in a war zone, or living in the Middle East, or on becoming a refugee. I was intrigued by Riverbend, I hope you find her story interesting.

Start with her first posts (scroll down to the bottom and work your way up)

August 2003

Read from at least one post from 2004, 2005, 2006 (choose from the archive on the right)

Then from her last few posts in 2007

April, September, October

And her final post from 2013

Good luck with exams, see you next semester for Ethics 🙂

Exam Revision

13 Monday Jun 2016

Exam is 90 minutes: an essay on one of the class texts and questions on a given text.

Students will have a choice of writing on EITHER Romeo and Juliet OR Animal Farm. Note that there will be other novels offered, done by other classes. Don’t answer them! Write only ONE essay.

Students will also have the option of bringing in a cheat sheet.

  • A4
  • Single sided
  • Hand written
  • Quotations and dot points
  • They CANNOT have paragraphs addressing key themes already written

Students should allow 60 minutes for the essay and 30 minutes to work on a critical reading.

HINTS:

  • some of the questions offered are likely to be similar to what you have answered in the assessment task
  • they are likely to be on key themes
    • Romeo & Juliet: love, fate, relationships (recall that we spent a bit of time on ‘star cross’d lovers’…)
    • Animal Farm as an allegory for power and organisation within society, and the increasing corruption of the ruling class
  • you may choose to have a range of events, key details and quotations from both texts, or concentrate on one and hope to get a favourable question.

Woodward Royal Commission (p160)

Woodward Royal Commission set up by Whitlam to see how land rights could be set up. Recommendations were to provide compensation, and ways of continuing and strengthening Aboriginal connection with tribal lands. Bill was amended after Dismissal and watered down to suit mining and pastoral businesses.
